Audience: Teachers (Grades 7 to 12) in a variety of subject areas, including Geography; Civics; Politics; Law; Social Sciences; and French Immersion and FSL

Presenter: Joseph Péloquin-Hopfner, Education Coordinator, Elections Canada

Description:
What makes an electoral district fair? That is the inquiry question that students explore as they draw their own electoral boundaries on an imaginary country’s map. They consider the geographic factors, both human and physical, that guide the real process of federal electoral redistribution. In this webinar, we will discuss the concepts of fairness and equity. We will also discover how challenging redistribution can be through the experience of an Elections Canada geographer who explains her role in the real process. We will share best practices in inquiry learning that aim to keep students engaged, thinking and exploring their own place in our elections and democracy. This resource is perfect for engaging Social Studies classrooms reviewing elements of Geography; Civics; Politics; Law; Social Sciences; and French Immersion and FSL. We will share easy-to-use tools you can work with to engage your students in our democracy, whether your classroom is online, in person or both.
